IV Therapy

If you feel like your life is a rat race, you are not alone. Many Americans work long hours, struggle to get enough sleep and don’t eat a balanced diet. This hectic lifestyle can leave the body deficient of the necessary vitamins, minerals, and amino acids it needs to function well. Intravenous (IV) Therapy can play a crucial role in helping the body restore and maintain proper nutrients. At All Star Pain Management and Regenerative Medicine, under the expert guidance of  Wellness Specialist Karen Scott PA-C, MSHS, we offer customized IV Therapy so that each patient can lead a full, productive, healthy life.

What is IV Therapy?

Intravenous (IV) Therapy is a non-surgical, in-office treatment that delivers vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and fluids directly into the bloodstream. By administering nutrients into a vein, the body receives the full potency of the nutrients. The vitamins, minerals, and amino acids used in IV Therapy can be tailored to specific concerns or goals. At All Star Pain Management, we customize each IV Therapy to meet the particular needs of each patient, enabling us to treat a wide range of issues, including:

  • Dehydration
  • Lack of energy
  • Depleted immune system
  • Stomach flu
  • Common cold
  • Migraines
  • Signs of aging
  • General nutrition
  • Malnutrition
  • Athletic recovery time
  • Athletic performance
  • Muscle aches
  • Hangover symptoms
  • Depression
  • Anxiety

What are the Benefits of IV Therapy?

The primary benefits of IV Therapy center around how nutrients are administered into the body. IV Therapy circumvents the digestive system and places vitamins, minerals, and amino acids, and fluids directly into the bloodstream. Nutrients administered intravenously are exceptionally powerful because they reach the bloodstream with their full potency and can work in the body for up to three weeks before losing their effectiveness. In addition, IV Therapy helps avoid issues caused by oral pills, such as stomach upset, digestive tract irritation, absorption problems and loss of potency.

In comparison to IV Therapy, vitamins taken by mouth must travel through the digestive system before the body can use them. Orally administered nutrients lose some of their efficacy and potency along the way, placing an unknown, lesser amount of nutrients into the body. Furthermore, some oral vitamins can cause stomach pain, disrupt the digestive system and cause nausea or diarrhea.

How is IV Therapy Administered?

Upon arrival at All Star Pain Management, our caring staff will help you get comfortable. Once an optimal vein is identified, the area around the insertion point is cleaned and disinfected. A needle will puncture the skin to insert a flexible plastic catheter into the vein. The needle is removed, and the catheter stays in place to administer a specific “cocktail” of vitamins, minerals, and amino acids directly into your bloodstream. It will take approximately 45 minutes for the IV drip to enter your bloodstream. During this time, you should feel no pain or discomfort and can rest, read or work. When the IV drip is finished, the catheter is removed and a small bandage is placed over the insertion point. You can immediately return to all of your activities. There is no downtime or recovery time needed after IV Therapy.

How Often Can I Have IV Therapy?

Vitamins, minerals, and amino acids administered through an IV will remain in your system for two to three weeks. Based on this timeline, some patients prefer to have IV Therapy on a routine basis (twice a month) to maintain nutrient levels. In contrast, other patients schedule IV Therapy only when they need an energy boost or feel like they are getting sick. Still others, such as cancer patients or people managing a chronic illness, may need weekly IV Therapy to maintain adequate nutrient levels. Athletes may also choose to have weekly IV Therapy to nourish their body, replenish depleted vitamins and maintain peak physical fitness. There is not a “one-size-fits-all” plan for IV Therapy. Karen Scott will help you determine the best therapy schedule to meet your personal needs and goals.

Am I a Good Candidate for IV Therapy?

Men and women of all ages, athletes and patients with a chronic illness or cancer can utilize IV Therapy to improve their overall wellness or address unique concerns. Specifically, IV Therapy can help:

  • Replenish and maintain nutrient levels
  • Give an immune system boost to someone coming down with a cold or the flu
  • Help a weary traveler recover from a long trip
  • Enhance personal beauty and promote skin health
  • Assist athletes in recovery and performance
  • Provide nutrients to patients who are undernourished due to a health condition

Some people with heart or blood pressure conditions may not be good candidates for IV Therapy. Karen Scott will help you determine if IV Therapy is right for you.

What are the Risks Associated with IV Therapy?

Although rare, risks associated with IV Therapy include infection at the puncture site, vein irritation, excessive use of vitamins or fluid overload. To reduce the risk of complications from IV Therapy, seek treatment from a Wellness Specialist, such as Karen Scott PA-C, MSHS. Karen Scott will listen to your goals and concerns. He will also take into account your current health status and any underlying health issues you may have. From there, Karen Scott will determine the appropriate type and dosage of vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and fluids to help you safely achieve your goals.
